Hi there, Ngunguru and Tutukaka community.

Since it’s October and Halloween is just around the corner, this month RD3 Tech will be talking about the Terrors of Tech! 👻

This week we’re talking about worms — but not the ones hanging around the end of your fishing line! 🎣

No, these little blighters are a type of malicious software that can replicate themselves and spread from one computer to another, often without the user realising what’s happening.

Once a worm gets onto a computer or network, it can spread rapidly. Depending on the type of worm, it may consume network resources, cause computers to slow down or stop working properly, damage or delete files, steal information, or even create a way for other malicious software to get onto your system.

And that’s what makes worms particularly nasty — they don’t always need you to keep clicking on things once they’ve got a foothold.

So, how do you make sure you don’t get the worms? 🪱

  1. Keep your security software up to date. Make sure your antivirus and other security protections are running and receiving updates.
  2. Run regular security scans. A scan can help identify malicious software before it causes further problems.
  3. Be careful with links and files. Don’t open unexpected attachments or click suspicious links, even if they appear to come from someone you know.
  4. Keep your operating system and software updated. Security updates often fix vulnerabilities that malicious software can exploit.
  5. Back up your important files. A good backup can make a big difference if something does go wrong.

Remember: not all worms are found in the garden! 🌱🐛

More Terrors of Tech coming next week…

All the best to the community,
