Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is something we all know about — but have you ever thought about what it could mean for your old computer?

Before you simply dump that old PC or laptop, stop and think about what’s still on it.

Your old computer could contain years of personal information, photos, documents, saved passwords, emails and other data. Simply deleting files isn’t always enough to make that information unrecoverable.

If you’re getting rid of an old computer, consider:

• Backing up anything you want to keep.
• Removing or securely erasing the storage drive so your personal information doesn’t go with the computer.
• Reusing components such as storage, memory or other hardware where practical.
• Selling or giving the computer to someone else after properly removing your personal data.
• Recycling it responsibly rather than simply putting it in the rubbish.

You might even discover some old photos, documents or other information you thought you’d lost!

An old computer doesn’t necessarily have to be useless. It might be suitable for someone else, useful as a secondary machine, or have components that can be reused.

Think about what you can do with what you already have before throwing it away.

Printers can be incredibly useful, but just like your computer, they need a little care and attention to keep working properly.

If your printer has been sitting unused for a while, you may start to notice faded prints, missing lines or streaks. With inkjet printers in particular, the ink can dry out and clog the print head.

Here are a few simple things you can do:

1. Check and clean the print nozzles. Most printers have a built-in cleaning function that can help clear minor blockages.
2. Run a print-head alignment. This can help if your text or images aren’t lining up correctly or the print quality has deteriorated.
3. Use the correct paper. Make sure you’re using paper suitable for your printer and the type of printing you’re doing.
4. Keep your printer clean. Dust, paper scraps and other debris can cause problems over time, so give the outside and accessible areas a gentle clean.
5. Use it regularly. If you have an inkjet printer, occasional printing can help prevent the ink from sitting unused for too long.

A little maintenance can save you from replacing cartridges — or even the whole printer — unnecessarily.
