🤖 Before You Buy an AI PC: Understanding Microsoft Recall

If you’re thinking about upgrading your laptop to a next-generation AI PC, there are a few things worth knowing before you buy.

One feature you may come across on newer Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs, including Snapdragon X Elite laptops, is Microsoft Recall.

What is Microsoft Recall?

Recall is an optional Windows feature designed to help you find things you have previously seen or done on your computer. When enabled, it can periodically capture snapshots of your screen, allowing you to search through your past activity.

That could include things such as websites, documents, applications and other information that has appeared on your screen.

This is where we need to think carefully about privacy and security.

Depending on what you are doing on your computer, snapshots could potentially contain private or sensitive information — for example, financial information, personal messages, documents or other confidential details.

Microsoft has designed Recall with security measures including encryption and user controls, and Recall is an opt-in feature. However, as with any technology that stores information about your activity, it is important to understand what it does before deciding whether to use it.

My advice: before buying a new AI laptop, take a few minutes to understand the features that come with it and review your privacy settings.

AI PCs offer some exciting new capabilities, but newer technology also means new things to consider when it comes to privacy, security and how your information is stored.

Please be careful with your information — and don’t enable features simply because they are available.

💻🔐Windows 10 Has Reached End of Support. What Now?

💻🔐 A Public Service Announcement for Your Computers

Hi Coastal Community,

For those of you still using a Windows 10 computer, this is an important reminder.

Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft’s standard support on 14 October 2025.

While your computer will continue to work, Microsoft no longer provides regular security updates or technical support for Windows 10. This means that continuing to use an unsupported computer can leave you more exposed to security risks.

Microsoft does offer Extended Security Updates (ESU) for eligible devices, but this is only a temporary solution rather than a long-term replacement for an unsupported operating system.

If your computer is still running Windows 10, now is a good time to consider your options.

What are your options?

There are two main pathways to consider:

  • Upgrade to Windows 11 if your existing computer meets the requirements.
  • Move to a Mac if you’re ready to consider a different platform.

It’s also worth remembering that not every older computer will be suitable for Windows 11. Sometimes upgrading the computer is the better option, rather than trying to keep an ageing machine going.

Don’t wait until your computer becomes a problem. Planning ahead gives you time to choose the right computer, move your files, set everything up properly and make sure your important data is backed up.

Thinking of selling an old computer or passing it on to a friend or family member?

Before you hand it over, it’s important to make sure your personal information is properly removed.
